About
The Dubliners Encore
Created and produced by John and Ceoladh Sheahan, with Musical Director Phil Coulter, The Dubliners Encore is the official stage show celebrating the story of Ireland’s beloved bearded balladeers. Since launching on The Late Late Show last September, the show has performed to thousands of Irish music fans at sold-out venues across Europe. Now, following their recent sell-out Irish tour, The Dubliners Encore takes to the stage that The Dubliners performed on for decades.
The popularity of The Dubliners is unquestionable, their contribution to the world of folk music unparalleled. True originals, the bad boys of Irish folk put Ireland on the world stage, releasing 30 original albums, selling 40 million records, and playing sold-out tours in a musical odyssey lasting 50 years. John and his late great bandmates Luke Kelly, Ronnie Drew, Barney McKenna and Ciarán Bourke, caught the imagination, playing Irish traditional music in a way never heard before, with an attitude never seen before. They revolutionised Irish music, taking it from the parlour and the pub to the world stage, leaving a legacy that helped transform Ireland and Irish music forever.
A member of the band for 50 years, John Sheahan has been working behind the scenes to create a show that authentically brings The Dubliners’ story to life on stage, personally overseeing every detail, every anecdote, and every musical note. After a two-year nationwide search, five incredible musicians were handpicked to recreate the spirit, energy, and musical talent of each original band member. Narrated by Imelda May and featuring their biggest hits and best-loved songs, The Dubliners Encore recaptures the band performing in their heyday, packing 50 years of songs, stories, and craic into one unforgettable night.
Speaking about the announcement John Sheahan said:
“Taking The Dubliner Encore’s to The Gaiety stage, which holds so many memories of wonderful nights playing with The Dubliners, feels like a homecoming for the show. Just a stone’s throw from O’Donoghue’s where it all started, The Gaiety and The Dubliners are forever intertwined, with Luke’s statue sitting proudly outside and Ronnie’s handprints forming part of the theatre’s ‘Walk of Fame’. Filling the Gaiety air once more with the music, songs, and story of my bandmates, will make for a series of very special performances for both Dubliners’ and Irish music fans alike."
Musical Director Phil Coulter shares his thoughts on the upcoming Gaiety Theatre shows, saying:
“For me this project has been a joy from the beginning. John and I wanted to make sure that every musical ingredient was true to the original, setting out to faithfully recreate the spirit of The Dubliners. On the show’s return to Ireland, there is just no better venue than The Gaiety… as quintessentially Dublin as the originals, and the scene of some of their finest hours.”
Producer Ceoladh Sheahan also reflects on the production, stating:
“The Dubliners were the soundtrack to many people’s lives growing up in Ireland and abroad and through The Dubliners Encore show they get to rewind and replay the memories of people and places from their past. As the daughter of a Dubliner, some of my earliest memories are of them playing in The Gaiety and some of my fondest are joining them on stage to perform The Marino Waltz with my dad. Together we have spent the last two years creating a show that authentically retells The Dubliners’ story and captures their unique sound, so that audiences can once again experience the magic of The Dubliners.”
