About
A Birmingham-born bright spark with soul and spirit at her core
Bellah Mae is part of Ticketmaster New Music’s Breakthrough 2024 list – our pick of the hottest new artists you must see live in 2024
There are countless songs about losing love. Whilst Bellah Mae might lean into this tradition with her candid brand of songwriting, her sarcastic sense of humour and scrappy attitude sees her stitching together the pieces of her broken heart with a deliberate ‘f*ck you’ to anybody that’s disrespected her.
Bellah’s musical journey began at home in Solihull, Birmingham where the future artist was surrounded by music of varying genres. Her grandad was a country singer so introduced Mae to classics of the genre from an early age, and inspired by Miley Cyrus’ Disney character Hannah Montana (which Mae shamelessly revealed was her first ever album purchase) she began writing her own songs from the age of just eight, picking up the guitar several years later where she’d spent hours learning Guns N’ Roses enduring rock ballad ‘Sweet Child ‘O’ Mine’. These musical pillars provided the framework for her artistry, and still influence the driving, fist-pumping pop rock that elevates the soulful depth of her voice to anthemic levels.
Because her family environment was laced with musical imagination, Bellah always believed she’d be a successful artist in her own right. “I’ve never wanted to do anything else – I’ve always believed that being a rockstar is attainable” she declared when asked about choosing her own path.
But it was a then-life-changing front-row experience seeing Taylor Swift which helped her decide what kind of artist she wanted to be: “Taylor is such a huge inspiration to me to this day, especially due to the fact she’s known as a ‘songwriter’”. Since then, Bellah Mae has ensured her spirit and sensibilities are at the core of her songwriting, which is the advice she’d pass on to fellow budding artists, saying: “nobody will ever want it as much as you, and that determination should help you overcome a lot.”
When she was just seventeen, Dolly Parton’s manager Danny Nozell invited her to perform in Nashville which made a huge impact on her craft, encouraging Mae to embrace her idiosyncrasies. It’s her whip smart lyricism and willingness to scrutinise her own life experiences which sets Bellah Mae’s songwriting apart from her pop rock peers.
Though Bellah had written hundreds of songs, she hand-picked ‘Boyfriend Of The Year’ to be her official debut single in 2022, which propelled her into the consciousness of young fans that shared similar histories with toxic ex-partners. Since then, the Gen Z up-and-comer has built an ardent following on TikTok by pulling no punches when it comes to pathetic men that have wasted her time in the past. “As a songwriter, it’s confirmation that I’m doing something right – it’s a dream for people to resonate with your songs.”
2023’s follow-up single ‘Drama King’ and subsequent release ‘Date Your Dad’ have further established Bellah Mae’s playful, powerful, and striking storytelling, seeing her draw comparisons with the likes of Olivia Rodrigo and her hero Taylor Swift. With stadium shows surely beckoning, her brutally relatable lyricism suggests she won’t suffer any fools anymore.
