About
The Sanders Institute and I.NY | The Ireland New York Project, warmly welcome Senator Bernie Sanders & Dr. Jane O'Meara Sanders to Dublin's Vicar Street for an evening of conversation about America's current moment, the responsibility to respond, how their shared political life has prepared them for this critical time in international politics, and the values and vision that underpin their work and ground their political commitment.
In Dublin to deliver the keynote speech to the Robert Tressel Festival, this second Dublin event is in partnership with The Sanders Institute, the Vermont-based progressive think tank established in the wake of Sanders' presidential campaign in 2016. Co-founded by Dave Driscoll and Dr. Jane O'Meara Sanders, Senator Sanders' wife and chief political advisor and strategist since the 1980s, The Sanders Institute is driven by the premise that a vital democracy requires an informed electorate, civil discourse and bold ideas - topics that will be at the heart of the Vicar Street conversation.
Bernie Sanders is the longest-serving independent Senator in U.S. political history. Currently leading a series of ‘anti-oligarchy’ rallies across the United States with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, regularly drawing crowds in the tens of thousands, he has, for the past decade, held an increasingly remarkable position in international politics - lifting and brightening the debate on social policy, and connecting deeply with people the world over as a result.
Elevated to this reputation during two ground-breaking campaigns for the White House, and through the policies he advanced and messages of community he promoted, he is arguably the most prominent voice and recognisable face of a more equal, empathic and people-focused politics. Bernie conjures ideas of a tireless drive for basic fairness in our economies and societies, and a striving for decency and compassion in our understandings of one another. He is the rare politician known simply, admiringly, by his first name.
Dr. Jane O’Meara Sanders is an entrepreneur in the public realm, a community activist and youth advocate. She is co-founder of The Sanders Institute which seeks to revitalise democracy by actively engaging individuals, organisations and the media in the pursuit of progressive solutions to economic, environmental, racial and social justice issues. Born in Brooklyn to a first-generation Irish family, Jane is deeply connected to Ireland, and to the social and political history which inform this country.
