About

After a sell-out show in Liberty Hall in 2024 where it received rapturous standing ovations, “Dockers” comes to The Ambassador Theatre Dublin.

Dockers is a historical musical narrative of Dublin docks, its people, and its places. It is a way of life consigned to history, but full of culture and traditions brought back to life on stage. In a show starring acclaimed singer and musician George Murphy (Rising Sons) and singer and multi-instrumentalist Tara Howley. George plays Jacko Dunne, a Dublin docker, recounting the life of a docker and the Dublin docklands through songs and stories. Tara plays Nora the bar manager and cousin of Jacko.

As Jacko, George Murphy brings his powerful presence and voice to new songs and ballads written by internationally recognised singer songwriter Damien Dempsey, Gary Brown, and Murphy himself. As usual Damien Dempseys music and songs are authentic, strong, and searingly honest.

In Dockers, the way of life on Dublin docks is all at once, hard, witty, poignant, and soulful, while also reminding us of the powerful history and culture of Dublin Port and its significance to modern Ireland. Powerful ballads and music describe work practices, tools, and dockland landmarks. Murphy’s inimitable voice as docker Jacko Dunne and Tara Howley’s melodic voice and playing, recounts working, carousing, loving, and leaving through powerfully delivered ballads and music.

The show is written by Gary Brown, a native Dubliner and son of a docker. He is the writer of the critically acclaimed show The Buttonmen. The show is directed by renowned director Joe O’Byrne

Dockers is a musical history lesson of Dublin docks, with laughs, craic, tears, and powerful new and original ballads. Not to be missed.
