About Henry Blofeld

BBC Test Match Special commentator Henry Blofeld is undoubtedly the current "voice of cricket" and he continues to be one of the best-loved characters in the game.

"Blowers" as he is affectionately known, is as famous for his musings on pigeons, planes, double Decker buses, tea ladies, cakes and his catchphrase ‘My dear old thing' as he is for his cricket commentary.

His side-splitting one-man show is a quintessentially British affair in which "Blowers" trawls through his extraordinary life. He was brought up in the idyllic Norfolk countryside amongst a vibrantly eccentric Edwardian household, and later educated at Eton and Cambridge. He dropped out to pursue a brief career in finance, before beginning his chequered career in journalism and later broadcasting.

To celebrate his 70th year he will be performing at a celebratory evening at The Royal Albert Hall, London on Saturday 30 May 2009. The evening will be hosted by fellow TMS colleague "Aggers" - Jonathan Agnew, and will include appearances from many friends in sport, journalism, entertainment and politics who have been a part of Henry's colourful life.

Speaking from his home in Chelsea, Henry Blofeld explained how delighted he was to be taking part in such an event   - "What an incredible honour - Blowers at The Royal Albert Hall. Who would have thought that when I tootled off to the Bat and Ball ground at Gravesend in May 1962 for my first day's cricket reporting that this is where it would get me 46 years later. I hope I am not bowled middle stump first ball!

It's going to be huge fun ! In the first act I am going to cobble together an amalgam of the best bits of my one man shows - some good, robust names will play a part in this. Her Majesty the Queen, Ian Fleming, Noel Coward, George Shearing and Clive Dunn all get a mention.

In the second act I will leave you in the capable hands of fellow BBC Test Match Special commentator and my old friend "Aggers" - Jonathan Agnew. He will chat with old friends and colleagues who have bravely put their lives on the line. I fear they will talk about me. I keep my fingers crossed that they won't tell the truth! What fun"
