The Cork music and arts festival returns to delight festival-goers in 2022

Fifteen years after the festival first launched, Indiependence returns in 2022 much to the delight of music fans.

The festival launched back in 2006 as a smaller event in the town centre of Mitchelstown, Cork with headlining acts like The Sultans of Ping, The Frank & Walters and Fight Like Apes. It continued in the same location for two more summers with The Republic of Loose, Cathy Davey, Delorentos and Ham Sandwich all appearing on the local stage.

With growing numbers of music-lovers flocking to the Munster festival each summer, Indiependence relocated to O’Connell Park in 2009 before moving again in 2010 to Deer Farm where it has been held every year since.

Since then, some of the biggest names in Irish and international music have graced the Cork stage, including Damien Dempsey, Hozier, Tom Odell, Basement Jaxx, Kodaline, Biffy Clyro and Lewis Capaldi.

The festival has been shortlisted as one of the best small festivals in Europe multiple times since its launch and has also won a number of Irish festival awards.

In 2020, INDIE (as it’s known by fans) had the likes of Stereophonics, Sigrid and The Streets all billed as headliners for the festival but the event had to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Later that year, organisers also announced that it would not be returning to its home in Mitchelstown and was on the hunt for new grounds. It was also confirmed that as a result of ongoing Covid-19 restrictions, the 2021 festival would also not go ahead.

In October 2021, Indiependence announced that the festival would finally be returning in 2022 after a two-year hiatus.
