About King Cotton

Two different worlds bound by the cotton collide in the unmissable theatre event of the year written by Jimmy McGovern, the multi award-winning author of Hillsborough, Cracker and The Street. The production is directed by Jude Kelly, one of the most dynamic and innovative theatre directors of recent times.

With its heart firmly in historical events linking the Lancashire cotton famine with the American Civil War, King Cotton tells the story of Tom, an impoverished mill-worker from the north west of England and Sokoto, a black slave from an American cotton plantation. Both are searching for their own freedom, but neither imagines that this will involve a journey across the Atlantic bringing them together with devastating consequences.

King Cotton is set to a soul-stirring score of brass band music and traditional American spirituals - performed by a live band (augmented by the Ashton-under-Lyne brass band).

With a cast drawn from stage and screen that includes John Henshaw (The Royle Family, Life On Mars, Diary of a Private Secretary), and set and costume design by Ti Green, Tony-nominated for her work on the Broadway production of the National Theatre's Coram Boy, this is the unmissable theatre event of the year.
