Morgan Wallen: One Night At A Time 2024
Having held half of the top ten tracks on the Billboard Hot 100 with songs from his 2023 album 'One Thing At A Time', Morgan Wallen can count himself as a country music superstar.
Born in Sneedville, Tennessee, Morgan’s relationship with music and performance blossomed at a very young age. He started singing at his local Southern Baptist church at the age of just three, and took both violin and piano lessons throughout his childhood. Educated on classic rock mainstays such as the Eagles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Fleetwood Mac by his father, Morgan’s focus began to shift toward the heavier rock stylings of Nickelback and the punchy metaphorical wordplay of hip-hop icon Lil’ Wayne throughout his rebellious teenagedom.
Though, a career in music wasn’t his burning ambition: it was baseball. Until a torn elbow ligament curtailed his course, so he turned to music for guidance. “I prayed and tried to figure out what was my plan and my purpose. That’s how I started writing songs and playing guitar just to get my feelings out,” Wallen admitted.
Those feelings he was putting to music resonated as far as Los Angeles, when Morgan’s major breakthrough came after auditioning for the 2014 series of The Voice. Piquing the interest of celebrity judges in Usher and Shakira, Maroon 5’s Adam Levine eventually became Wallen’s mentor as he progressed through the series. Performing songs like Avicii’s ‘Hey Brother’ and One Direction’s ‘Story of My Life’, it was clear Wallen hadn’t settled on the sound that suited him, and was eventually knocked out from The Voice. But it was only the beginning of his story.
Having made industry connections during his stint on television, Morgan was picked up by Panacea Records, who encouraged his country music leanings. Releasing his 2015 debut EP, 'Stand Alone', his debut single ‘Spin You Around’ indicated his raw talent. Further success followed suit after with the release of 2017’s ‘The Way I Talk’, with Wallen co-writing songs like Jason Aldean’s ‘You Make It Easy’ with Florida Georgia Line's Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley. Morgan would team up with the duo once again for ‘Up Down’, the budding singer’s first entry in the top five of the US Billboard Country charts. He never looked back.
Adopting a retro-inspired look complete with mullet, Morgan made waves as a character and unconventional heartthrob as much as a country artist. All the while, his 2018 debut studio album 'If I Know Me' climbed to the top of the charts two years after its release, propelled by singles like ‘Whiskey Glasses’ and ‘Chasin’ You’, with Wallen seeing out 2020 by winning New Artist of the Year at the November 2020 CMA Awards and welcoming his firstborn son, Indigo Wilder.
When the pandemic brought the world to a grinding halt, Wallen used the time wisely for his blockbuster follow-up in 2021’s 'Dangerous: The Double Album', which featured record-breaking singles ‘More Than My Hometown’, ‘7 Summers’, ‘Sand in My Boots’, and ‘Wasted on You’.
A few bumps in the road wouldn’t halt Wallen’s journey to bonafide global superstardom thereafter, with the release of his whopping 36-track album 'One Thing At A Time' in 2023. An instant success, single ‘Last Night’ topped the chart with four other songs – ’You Proof’, ‘Thought You Should Know’, ‘Thinkin’ Bout Me’ and the title track – occupying five of the top ten spots, a feat only The Beatles, Taylor Swift, Drake, 21 Savage and Juice WRLD have achieved.
Cementing his worldwide acclaim the year after, Morgan Wallen embarked on a major tour of his home country, whilst stopping over in the UK for a headline performance at BST Hyde Park after the release of his unlikely but excellent collaboration ‘I Had Some Help’ with Post Malone.
