About
Anthemic pop mixing catchy melodies with introspective lyricism
Nieve Ella is part of Ticketmaster New Music’s Breakthrough 2024 list – our pick of the hottest new artists you must see live in 2024
As the nation went into lockdown during the Covid pandemic, many of us swore we’d finally learn that dusty musical instrument we’d been threatening to pick up for years. Most of us never actually did it, but Nieve Ella, born and raised in the West Midlands, picked up a guitar and decided she was going to be a pop star…
Now an artist who carries profound and complex lyricism, Ella also doesn’t shy away from her pop roots. There are shades here of Carly Rae Jepsen, but an introspective look across her life more akin to Adele. Taylor Swift is a clear and obvious influence. In fact, fans at Ella’s shows are already sharing homemade bracelets. What’s the Midlands equivalent of a ’Swifty’?
Since launching her career, Ella has already supported Dylan and garnered quite a following from the release of her first two EPs. The debut came out at the start of 2023, entitled ‘Young and Naïve’, featuring the catchy, anthemic track ‘19 In A Week’. Ella’s sophomore record released in late summer, with the striking ‘Car Park’ showing us exactly what sort of artist she wanted to be. Ella is a storyteller, growing up with each track, and it’s a journey she wants us all to be a part of.
TikTok has played a huge role in Ella’s career, elevating her presence and amplifying her voice, but it’s also been key to building a fanbase – giving Ella the confidence she needs from an ever-growing support group. There’s something innately positive, if raw and authentic, about her style. Always seeking the silver lining, there’s little room for misery here. With this comes a degree of vulnerability (she’s even opened up about creating a fictitious romance between herself and Harry Styles, for the song “Blue Shirt Boy”...), and her fans are always right there when she needs them.
Looking back is all part of Ella’s style – making sense of her past to better understand her present – but it’s the future that’s still the most exciting. “I’ve got so much more I want to say…” Ella told Notion.
