About

The Ferryman

"Vanishing. It's a powerful word, that. A powerful word." County Armagh, Northern Ireland, 1981. The Carney farmhouse is a hive of activity with preparations for the annual harvest. A day of hard work on the land and a traditional night of feasting and celebrations lie ahead. But in the Maze prison, the IRA hunger strikers are dying. Out on the bog, a body has been dug up. And this year, their usual harvest celebrations will be interrupted by an unexpected visitor.

The Ferryman is inspired the true family story of Laura Donnelly, the wife of Butterworth and actress who originated the leading role in the West End and on Broadway. Seven months before she was born, Donnelly’s 26-year-old uncle disappeared in Co. Down near the border. It took three years to discover the truth about his politically motivated disappearance.

Butterworth’s past titles include Tony Award-nominated JERUSALEM, Olivier Award-winning MOJO, in addition to Spectre (2015) and Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny (2023) for screen.
