About
Soothing, silky songwriter proving Britain still has soul
Elmiene is part of Ticketmaster New Music’s Breakthrough 2024 list – our pick of the hottest new artists you must see live in 2024
Pronounced El-Mean, this British-Sudanese star’s voice is hard to forget. Raised in Oxford, England, with the birthname Abdala Elamin, Elmiene’s rising star is built on first impressions. You hear that soothing, tranquil voice, and you need to hear it again. It’s contagious, addictive. This has led to a crop of producers and artists wanting to work with Elmiene, beginning when his first single ‘Golden’ was selected to command Virgil Abloh’s posthumous show.
Elmiene’s second single ‘Why (Spare Me the Tears)’ was produced by Jamie Woon who referred to his young collaborator as an “RnB scholar and vocal alien”, correctly labelling a musician who takes great pride in the inspirations drawn from those who have paved the way in modern neo-soul. Influences range from D’Angelo, Daniel Caesar and Brent Faiyaz, while legendary acts such as Prince and Stevie Wonder also stand out, especially in Elmiene’s writing.
Not just carrying a silken tune, Elmiene’s ability to inject poetry into his words elicits raw and relatable emotion. He speaks with authority, yet he carries vulnerability. You get a sense that he knows exactly what he’s talking about, but like all of us, he’s still a little lost. His writing is positive, he has a zest for life, allowing him, and in turn, us, to philosophise heartache. He’s a voice you want in your own headphones, speaking directly to you.
Drawing big-name fans close, Elmiene continues work with those he admires, having written for Stormzy and enjoyed studio time with Timbaland and Justin Timberlake. In 2017, Mercury Prize winner Sampha produced his single ‘Mama’. “He is the career template that I’m chasing,” Elmiene told Music Week – and you’d be hard pressed to bet against this man taking home a Mercury Prize of his own someday.
