About

Formed in Detroit in 1967, The Stooges, along with the MC5 were one of the pioneering bands of Detroit Garage rock.

After achieving widespread notoriety for their extreme live performances (frontman Iggy Pop would appear shirtless on stage, often harm himself with broken glass and challenge audiences to fights), the band released their self-titled debut in 1969. Despite now achieving classic status, the album (as was the case with seminal follow-up Fun House) was a commercial flop.

Following the release of Fun House to a flurry of bad reviews, the band fell apart to an extent, with the members working odd jobs and struggling with substance abuse issues. In 1972 however, David Bowie produced their third album, Raw Power; which was ironically greeted with strong reviews by the critics, while many fans believed the sound was too thin.

The album has later been credited as influencing the advent of punk, but once again at the time was a commercial flop.

Iggy left the band to embark on a solo career in the late 70s, but in 2003 the band reformed for a series of gigs and appearances on Iggy's Skull Ring album. As Iggy pointed out at the time "we're amazed to be here, we're amazed to be anywhere."
