About
Sammy Virji is part of Ticketmaster New Music Breakthrough 2025 – our pick of the hottest new artists you must see live in 2025
Emerging on the scene in 2017, Sammy Virji has since gained a reputation for his dance floor-filling anthems, such as ‘Find My Way Home’ and ‘Daga Da’, which masterfully combine old-school garage influences with infectious modern beats.
Born in London before moving to Witney in Oxfordshire, Samuel Bashir Virji (AKA Sammy Virji) grew up in a musical family. A professional musician, his dad played trombone on The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, and was keen to share his record collection of Latin, African and jazz music. Encouraged, Sammy started writing on piano and guitar before progressing to making his own electronic music, with his most formative influences ranging from Michael Jackson to dubstep artists like Skream, Plastician and Benga. During his time at Newcastle University studying biology, Sammy saw bassline artist Flava D perform and was inspired to give music a go full-time, promptly dropping out of university whilst in his third year.
Finding favour in his groove-laden tracks, Sammy soon made the shift from bassline towards garage, helping to spearhead the genre’s current renaissance in the UK. His track ‘Find My Way Home’ was released in 2018, and remains one of his most-streamed efforts, currently sitting at more than 27 million on Spotify. Sammy soon caught the attention of Conducta, founder of Kiwi Rekords (the new label credited with pushing the UK garage scene forwards), and together, they released the anthemic singles ‘Shapes’ and ‘Whippet’ (2019).
Dedicated to bridging the gap between underground cuts and mainstream audiences, Sammy Virji’s debut album, Spice Up My Life arrived in 2020 as a lush, R&B-inspired take on the garage genre, laced with his signature wobbly basslines. In conversation with Mixmag, Sammy said of the album, "I want it to be something you can dance to, but also chill to, and cook to!" Peaking at no.7 on the UK Dance Albums Chart, the album showcased his ability to craft vibrant tracks, as well as a creative desire to feature and collaborate with other artists. In a satisfying full-circle moment for Sammy, Flava D went on to remix the album’s title track.
In 2022, Sammy Virji released a remix of Piri & Tommy’s ‘On & On’ which was an instant hit, and was swiftly followed by ‘If U Need It’ which charted at No. 85. Next came ‘Shella Verse’ in 2023, a now-cult dancefloor classic and staple within Sammy’s set, thanks in part to its iconic cameo from British urban music’s most recognisable and respected MCs, Flowdan. In August of the same year, Sammy Virji made waves with his DJ Mag set which promptly racked up millions of views for its seamless genre-spanning transitions and forward-thinking production, underpinned by Sammy’s megawatt smile and infectious energy. Several clips from the show went viral on TikTok, including when the fire alarm was triggered during ‘Peach’ due to the amount of sweat in the air.
Between the prolific releases and collaborations, Sammy has been intent on bringing his music to the masses. Embarking on various tours across the UK, EU and US, on aptly named efforts such as the ‘Like A Virjin’ tour, his reputation for genuinely joyful performances has amassed sizeable crowds and seen him perform at Glastonbury and more, with fans keen to lose their 'virjinity'. With recently released ‘Summertime Blues (ft. Nathan Nicholson)’ and ‘Damager’ (2024) now bolstering his undeniably distinctive discography, the future is looking bright for hitmaker Sammy Virji.
